Becca Hoffman, Managing Director of Intersect Art and Design says, “For our second edition of Intersect Aspen, we are so pleased to be bringing together an incredible group of local cultural nonprofits—Anderson Ranch, Aspen Film, Red Brick Art Center, and the Soldner Center—through our robust program of events. Additionally, we are delighted to have the opportunity to continue our ‘Collectors at Home’ series, which allows our VIP ticket holders to explore some of the incredible private art collections right here in Aspen, and which received a very positive response last year. It is a delight to be able to host the Fair again this summer, bringing new galleries to Aspen, and highlighting a broad and dynamic cross-section of the arts.”

Paul Laster, Curatorial Advisor for Intersect Art and Design, says, “In its second year in person, Intersect Aspen, with its incredibly art-savvy audience of collectors and art enthusiasts, offers a high-level yet intimately scaled hub for new discoveries. Galerie Gmurzynska is presenting some rare Picasso pieces; Berry Campbell is filling its booth with major works of abstraction; and James Barron Art is mixing self-taught Italian artists with American contemporary masters. Exhibitors are excited to return, and to showcase art and artists they are bringing specifically for this uniquely situated Fair.”

David Yarrow’s Aspen photos—shot in Aspen in March 2022; the first time he has used Aspen as a location—feature such popular locations as Woody Creek Tavern and Cloud Nine with notable subjects including supermodels.

Chambers Fine Art (New York and Salt Point, New York, USA)
Presenting: Fu Xiaotong
Fu Xiaotong has described how “in my early work I reflected upon the traditional Chinese literati paintings on rice paper and ink, as well as the relationship between needle and thread in traditional women's life.” As an experiment, Fu removed the nib from the brush of the Chinese writing and painting tool, and installed a needle for sewing and embroidery, and thus began her ten-year-long practice of piercing holes into traditional Xuan paper. This new, creative method effectively addressed her dual focus on traditional Chinese literati painting and traditional ‘female’ embroidery, highlighting her resistance to the inherent gender biases hidden in these two creative forms. For Fu’s works showing at Intersect Aspen this year, she explores the idea of “life energy;” how life energy is summoned and driven, to what extent individual life can tap into this common life force.

CHART Gallery (New York, NY, USA)
Presenting: Karin Davie, Carrie Schneider, and Shona McAndrew
Karin Davie has created a new series, “In Out, In Out,” with new “redux” work that continues to explore and even reshape her looping, swirling stripe motif. Davie works to engage the viewer on both an optical and physical level, with an emphasis on color and unbroken mimetic gestures.
Carrie Schneider’s photographs, each a unique print, were created sans camera by exposing existing images directly to photographic paper.
Shona McAndrew expresses her artistic vision through carefully rendered figuration, while drawing from personal and historical references.

Friedrichs Pontone (New York, NY, USA)
Presenting: Matteo Massagrande, Iain Faulkner, Hwang Seontae, Henry Jabbour, Chris Rivers, and Angela Glajcar
The gallery will bring new work by Angela Glajcar, a German sculptor named one of the Women to Watch in 2020 by the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C., who will have her first NY solo show with the gallery in the fall.

Galerie Gmurzynska (Zurich and Zug, SWITZERLAND; New York, New York, USA)
Presenting: Pablo Picasso, David Smith, Louise Nevelson, Yves Klein, Joan Miró, Wifredo Lam, and Roberto Matta.
Picasso’s Venus et Amour (Venus and Cupid) is a detached fresco from 1918, which the artist painted on the walls of his honeymoon suite after his marriage to Olga Khokhlova. The work speaks of love, classical antiquity, Coco Chanel (his other muse during this moment), and eventually found itself in Warhol’s Factory in the 1970s.
Picasso’s La main gauche de Picasso (The left hand of Picasso) is the only left hand in plaster which Picasso crafted; the complementary right hand is in the collection of the Musée Picasso and was the cover of the first catalogue raisonne of Picasso’s sculptural work. Both hands date from 1937, one of the most important years of Picasso’s career, when he painted Guernica. This sculpture has been in the same private collection for around 50 years.
Wifredo Lam’s Composition from 1947 is one of the earliest representations of the Femme Cheval in Wifredo Lam’s oeuvre. Lam from Cuba and of African-Chinese heritage is one of the most important figures of the 20th century to be currently receiving due celebration and re-evaluation by historians, museums, and collectors.

Galerie Maximillian (Aspen, Colorado, USA)
Presenting Nina Chanel Abney, Mel Bochner, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeffrey Gibson, Rashid Johnson, Harland Miller, and Yinka Shonibare, and celebrating 25 years of representing art in Aspen.

There will be a selection of four new paintings which Kleberg is creating specifically for the gallery’s booth at Intersect Aspen.

Hexton Gallery (Aspen, Colorado, USA)

Drawing from an eclectic range of influences from cave painting, graffiti art, and cartoons, to Abstract Expressionism, Saylor is a cultural scavenger sifting through the detritus of civilization and the New York underground.

MARC STRAUS (New York, New York, USA)
Presenting: Anna Leonhardt, Clive Smith, Michael Brown, Antonio Santin, Chris Jones, Jose Carlos Martinat, and Marie Watts

Miles McEnery Gallery (New York, New York, USA)

Nancy Hoffman Gallery (New York, New York, USA)

Timothy Cummings’ brand new painting Nature Boy fits right into the gallery’s theme, Nature's Bounty. Under a moonlit sky, in front of azure waters, stands a young boy bedecked in a garment of leaves that cascade from head to toe, a garment of pure nature.
Michele Pred's newest work, a mirror, takes the theme to a different realm. Her mirror, Bans Off Our Bodies, is adorned with an eagle and lush foliage, "our country 'tis of thee," and on the reflective mirror surface is etched "Bans Off Our Bodies," a profound saying of the moment.
Katerina Lanfranco’s Lace Waterfall will be shown for the first time, this evocation of a secret garden leads the eye to a hidden garden gate while a profusion of flowers and leaves, trees, and webs animate the foreground. The eye lights upon flower after flower, each an invention of the artist’s mind and creativity. The entirety looks like a stage set or a dream-like fantasy of a magical secret garden, a place one can never visit, but one can dream of, and see in the artist’s hands.

Nancy Littlejohn Fine Art (Houston, Texas, USA)
Presenting: Marc Dennis, Alexis Rockman, Kysa Johnson, Anne Lindberg, Petah Coyne, William Anzalone

Holland Cunningham's recently completed Match Series is inspired by her deep connection to collective memory.

Leadership
Intersect is a partnership of brothers Tim and Dirk von Gal, who are event industry veterans with more than 50 years of combined experience creating successful trade shows and conferences for business, consumer, and art industry sectors. The three fairs had been under the umbrella of Tim von Gal’s former company Urban Expositions (founded in 1995), which was acquired by Clarion in 2015. The von Gal brothers’ launch of Intersect in April 2020 brings the fairs back under their management once again. Intersect is part of vGMgt LLC, which is a team of dedicated professionals focused on customer service, integrity, and the experiential value of Intersect Art and Design.

Managing Director Becca Hoffman, who joined Intersect Art and Design in April 2020, was the Director of the Outsider Art Fair from 2013 – 2020, and was formerly the director of Peter Findlay Gallery, and Andrew Edlin Gallery. Hoffman received her B.A. in Fine Art Photography from Dartmouth where she helped start the first student art gallery and worked at the Hood Museum of Art. From there, Hoffman achieved her M.A. in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s in London.

Intersect Fairs
